A few years ago, in an article published in theJournal of the American Medical Association, researchers reported that more than 200,000 people in the UK had taken generic versions of Viagra, the active ingredient in the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. In a survey of more than 500,000 men, nearly half had taken Viagra, and half had taken generic versions of the drug. Many of the men who took the generic version of Viagra also reported feeling "very anxious," or "very nervous," about the drug's effects. "There are some men who are very afraid of Viagra," said Dr. David Wood, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at New York University. "If you take Viagra, they want to take it with you."
Many of the men taking Viagra reported a feeling that the drug was working, as did a small number of those who took generic versions. At one point, a man with erectile dysfunction who took Viagra told me he took Viagra to try to "prevent my pain."
But the man who took generic versions of Viagra, who I spoke with in person, did not feel it was working. "I couldn't have been more wrong," he said. "I had to take Viagra."
The men who took generic versions of Viagra also reported feeling nervous, like a "very nervous" individual, because "they had this very strong sense of impending doom," said Dr. "These men are very scared and worried, and if I took Viagra, they would feel very nervous."
Dr. Wood and his colleagues wrote an editorial in theNew England Journal of Medicine(JAMA) in June 2017 in which they said it was "important to understand that the risk of serious health problems from taking erectile dysfunction drugs is quite high and that the benefits are very low." They added that a recent report of a study by the National Institutes of Health found that, while the risk was "very small," that men taking erectile dysfunction drugs experienced "significant, even greater risks."
In their editorial, Wood and his colleagues wrote that they found that "the drugs were safe to use and effective for some men." In their editorial, Wood and his colleagues also warned against using the drug, saying it could lead to serious side effects, including liver toxicity and death, "even though these risks are very small."
In fact, "Viagra is not the only drug that can help men with erectile dysfunction, including some men who are taking drugs such as Cialis, Levitra and Staxyn," Wood said. "It should also be used in conjunction with other medications that work to help men get an erection."
One of the men in the study who took Viagra had taken generic versions of Viagra for several years, he added.
The men in his study also reported a different way in which they felt "very anxious" about the drug. In one of the men, he said, "I felt very anxious," and "there was no way to stop it."
Another of the men in his study who took generic versions of Viagra also reported feelings that the drug was causing "severe nervousness," he added. "The drug was effective in most men," he said.
He added that, while the study was done, he and his colleagues "were hoping to have the men understand that the drug could be a safe and effective way to treat erectile dysfunction."
As one of the authors of the study, Dr. John P. Dowsett, MD, an associate professor of urology at the University of Toronto, told me, "Viagra is a very good medicine and I think it is very well known. But the drug can be quite dangerous to some men, and the side effects of Viagra are quite serious."
In his editorial, Wood and his colleagues wrote that, "In our study, we did not find any adverse reactions to Viagra."
In their editorial, Wood and his colleagues said that the side effects of Viagra were similar to those seen with the drug Cialis. "The side effects of Viagra were less with Cialis," he added. "The Viagra side effects were similar to those seen with Cialis."
The same editorial noted that in a study published in theJournal of Sexual Medicine) in September 2018, Dr.

What is Erectile Dysfunction?Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to gain or maintain an erection, sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. It is a very common problem, affecting half of Irish men over 50.
Most men will experience some sort of difficulty in getting an erection over their lives. This difficulty for some men will only be a temporary problem and will often be related back to a specific set of circumstances such as stress, tiredness or even alcohol intake. Erectile Dysfunction is only a problem when it is persistent and recurring. While Erectile Dysfunction is more common in older men, it can occur at any age.
Erectile Dysfunction can also be caused by physical conditions such as Diabetes, uncontrolled High Blood Pressure and Vascular Disease (this is the narrowing of blood vessels) and can be an ‘early warning sign’ of heart disease. Erectile Dysfunction can also be caused by conditions that affect your nerves and hormonal balance. Psychological issues such as stress, depression and anxiety can also contribute to Erectile Dysfunction. In most cases Erectile Dysfunction is caused by a combination of both physical and psychological factors.
Since erectile dysfunction symptoms can vary, some men might want to speak to a healthcare professional before they begin to treat it. Speak to your GP or a pharmacist if you’re concerned about symptoms.
